Project Team - UNEP-WCMC

Valerie Kapos

Valerie Kapos is Head of the Climate Change and Biodiversity programme at UNEP-WCMC. She has expertise in tropical forest ecology (especially fragmentation), biodiversity indicators climate change policy and multiple benefits, and measures of the effectiveness of conservation action. With UNEP-WCMC she has worked extensively on development and use of biodiversity indicators, including spatial indicators derived from land cover data and indicators derived from national forest assessments, to support policy and decision making at international and national scales. For the REDD-PAC project, V. Kapos is providing expert advice on biodiversity elements of the project.

Rebecca Mant

Rebecca Mant is a Senior Programme Officer with the Climate Change and Biodiversity programme at UNEP-WCMC. Her background is in ecology and since joining UNEP-WCMC has focused on the understanding and monitoring of the biodiversity and ecosystem services impact of climate change adaptation and mitigation measures including REDD+. For the REDD-PAC project, R. Mant is the overall lead, of the UNEP-WCMC team and oversees the biodiversity elements of the project.

Corinna Ravilious

Corinna Ravilious is a Senior GIS Officer within the Climate Change and Biodiversity Programme at UNEP-WCMC. She has worked within the GIS team at UNEP-WCMC since 1991, and so has a deep familiarity with the range of biodiversity data available, the types of analysis feasible and the presentation of outputs to suit either both technical and lay audiences. She has worked upon a number of UNEP flagship products, including the World Atlas of Coral Reefs, World Atlas of Biodiversity and the earlier Conservation Atlas of Tropical Forest series. For the REDD-PAC project, C. Ravilious is carrying out the spatial analysis and mapping of biodiversity and multiple benefits of REDD+.

Cordula Epple

Cordula Epple is a Programme Officer with the Climate Change and Biodiversity Programme at UNEP-WCMC. A vegetation scientist by training, Cordula works on various aspects of the relationship between biodiversity and climate change including the impacts of climate change on biodiversity, the potential of ecosystems to support climate change adaptation, and ways to ensure that efforts to slow climate change by managing ecosystem carbon stocks are in line with the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services. In the REDD-PAC project, Cordula Epple is leading on the work with Peru.

Blaise Bodin

Blaise Bodin is a Programme Officer with the Climate Change and Biodiversity programme at UNEP-WCMC. For the UN-REDD Programme, Blaise is working to support the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Republic of Congo national programmes, including DRC spatial planning for multiple benefits, and the Benefits and Risks Tool (BeRT). Before joining the centre in 2012, Blaise completed an internship within the Environmental, Climate and Social Office of the European Investment Bank, focusing on the development of biodiversity standards. Prior to that, Blaise worked in the French Senate as a Parliamentary Assistant on environmental legislation. Blaise completed his MSc in Environmental Change and Management at Oxford in 2011. For the REDD PAC project, B. Bodin is helping to co-ordinate the biodiversity work in the Congo Basin, including leading the work on the Congo Basin Atlas. He is also supporting on the policy review component.

Matea Osti

Matea is a Programme Officer Climate Change and Biodiversity programme at UNEP-WCMC. Her main area of work focuses on international financing for REDD+, and in particular helping to manage and maintain the Voluntary REDD+ Database of the REDD+ Partnership, in collaboration with FAO. She also has experience in work related to ecosystem-based multiple benefits from REDD+, including work on carbon, biodiversity, and ecosystem service mapping to assist countries with addressing multiple benefits in the planning and implementation of their climate change mitigation measures. Prior to joining UNEP-WCMC, Matea completed a Master of Science degree at the University of Oxford, undertaking research on oil and gas development in the natural World Heritage and wider protected area network in sub-Saharan Africa. For the REDD PAC project, M. Osti is leading the work in the Philippines.

Judith Walcott

Judith is a Programme Officer Climate Change and Biodiversity programme at UNEP-WCMC. Her work focuses on supporting countries in the planning for and mapping of biodiversity and ecosystem services benefits from REDD+. Before joining the Centre, Judith completed her PhD in Geography at the University of Cambridge. Judith also holds an MSc in Anthropology and Development from the London School of Economics and a BA in International Relations from Tufts University. She has worked with educational institutions and NGOs in the United States, Ecuador, and the United Kingdom on topics including biodiversity and indigenous cultural survival, sustainable development, and migration and displacement. For the REDD PAC project, J. Walcott supports the work in Peru.

Julia Thorley

Julia is an Assistant Programme Officer Climate Change and Biodiversity programme at UNEP-WCMC. Her work focuses on GIS analysis and involves assisting with the implementation of a range of projects relating to the interaction between biodiversity and climate change, particularly with mapping multiple benefits as part of ecosystem-based carbon mitigation strategies. Before joining the centre in 2012, Julia worked as a researcher for an animal welfare organisation for a year following an internship at the Institute of Zoology, ZSL. Julia graduated in BSc Environmental Geography from UCL in 2009. For the REDD PAC project, J. Thorley supports the work on spatial analysis and GIS.

Tânia Salvaterra

Tânia is an Assistant Programme Officer in the Climate Change and Biodiversity Programme, Tania's role involves assisting on the different projects undertaken by the programme, including the UN-REDD project. She also contributes to the preparation and proofreading of information outputs as required. Tania has a background in ecology and has conducted research at University College Dublin (UCD), in Ireland, and also at the Zoological Society of London (ZSL). She has an MSc Conservation from University College London and a BSc Biology from Aveiro University in Portugal. For the REDD PAC project, T. Salvaterra is assisting the development of the methods for assessing biodiversity impacts of future policy options in Brazil.

Elina Väänänen

Elina is an Assistant Programme Officer with the Climate Change and Biodiversity Programme at UNEP-WCMC. Her role entails assisting with the implementation of a range of projects relating to REDD+. Recently, she has been working on a UN-REDD Benefits and Risks Tool for analyzing policies, laws and regulations relating to the Cancun safeguards, and on planning efforts for multiple benefits from REDD+. Elina has an MPhil focused on Environmental Law and Economics from the University of Cambridge and a BSc in Environmental Policy from the London School of Economics. Previous work has included research on climate change adaptation at the Tata Group in India and work on regulatory safety assessment of nanomaterials at the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency.
